One Way Ticket, Part 2

I have spoken English my entire life, and still do not understand the words coming out of your mouth.

As the team reviewed the data they’d gathered from Peter’s apartment, JC, the man behind the “AI” Potomac barely noticed when Noose excused himself. He would resolve the possible Occupy Gondor lead himself in the time it took for the others to even decide on a surveillance drone.

It didn’t take long for JC to make his way by motorcycle into the crowd of orks and trolls encamped throughout the government complex in downtown Norfolk. Relying on his chameleon coated clothing to avoid drawing attention, JC searched the area for Peter, only to learn that a number of the less die-hard members had fled into the Campostella Barrens, for fear of police reprisals.

Checking back in with Parker’s CleanBot, JC took note of a new addition, apparently Noose had been replaced with the elf, Moreau, from the last job. Moreau was negotiating with some contact of his for a drone to provide aerial surveillance, but the price sounded higher than the group was likely to pay, given the limited payout on this job. With a shrug, JC turned his bike south, into the Barrens and with a little help from the matrix, located a builidng chock full of orks. And, through one of the upper windows, their target. The grin on JC’s face faded just as quickly as it appeared when, from the building he was using as cover, he heard the scrape of claws and something massiveā€¦ sniffing.

Moving swiftly, JC beamed a message from Potomac to Parker with the GPS coordinates and pictures of the ork hide-out before using his grapple gun to make an escape to the roof of his current building. From his new position, he got a good look at the creatures stalking him, a trio of ghouls, feral, by their behavior. One seemed to be following a trail back to where is bike was parked while the other two sought a way up the building towards him. Before seeking an escape route, JC put a round into the ghoul that was homing in on his only means of transportation, then raced the ghouls and orks by way of rooftops to his bike.

Meanwhile, having received the cryptic message from her “badger buddy”, Potomac, Parker urged the group to move past the drone, the limited pay of the run, and into the Campostella Barrens. Unfortunately, the team was looking at a long drive from Hampton.

As his unwitting allies closed in, JC raced the ghouls back to his bike, having lost his rifle on the rooftops earlier. As he gages the last sprint across a small parking lot, JC takes comfort in the fact that the ghouls seem to be tangling with the orks from Occupy Gondor. Making the dash, he re-evaluates his odds of survival when the ghoul he’d shot earlier bursts from the shadows after him. As JC puts the bike in gear, the ghoul slams into him, claws finding purchase in his flesh. The pair go down in a heap as the bike skids to a halt nearby.

Recognizing he has no hope of fighting the ghoul while pinned to the ground, JC takes the desperate gamble of slipping into VR and jumping into his motorcycle. Forcing it back up, JC watches through the bike’s camera as the ghoul prepares to tear into his throat. With no time to plan for his own survival, JC throws the bike into gear and barrels down on the ghoul. By sheer fortune, the bike hits an irregularity in the pavement, lifting off the ground and missing JC as it takes the ghoul full in the chest. At that very moment, Tristana’s van turns the corner, receiving the full force of JC’s bike on the side-door, sundering the ghoul in two.

During efforts to revive JC and ensure he pays for damages to the van, Parker is informed via Potomac that JC is another of the AI’s friends. As such, the strange runner should be treated with a modicum of respect, since he did provide a valuable service in locating the Occupy Gondor safehouse. Convincing her compatriots of this takes a little time, but finally, Tristana settles for locking him in her van and securing the bike to the roof as collateral for repairs.

All this commotion spurs Yuri’s newly acquired dog, Boris, to run off after a devil rat and draws the attention of the Occupy guards. Confronted with these new opponents, Moreau launches into an inspirational speech on how all people are part of Mordor and are all oppressed by “the Man”, Gondor. For better or worse, while Moreau has these orks in thrall to his voice, Yuri is trying to get Boris to come back to the van. Instead, the mastiff, having caught the devil he knew, attacked the devil he didn’t know, launching into the nearest ork with abandon and scaring the others into flight.

In spite of Yuri’s attempts to coax his dog into the van, Boris takes a leg from the ork he killed and starts trotting towards the Occupy Gondor safehosue. The rest of the team, seeing little choice, follows. JC, as Potomac, proceeds to hack the drones that Occupy Gondor has patrolling while looking for a means of preventing infection from the ghoul’s attack. As the team closes, JC slips out of VR and works to retreive his bike.

Moreau regurgitates his speech to the remaining guard while Parker scales the building. Unfortunately, with Boris chewing on a guard’s leg , Moreau has a much harder time selling the tale. Parker, meanwhile, has hit the third floor patio outside the room in which JC saw Peter. Parker carefully cuts out a small section of glass in the door to defeat the lock and makes her way into the room where Peter is watching a trid-porn. Potomac confirms Peter against the photograph provided by Grigori.

While the ork guard is trying to make sense of Moreau, JC manages to lever the bike far enough off the van that it crashes down, barely missing him. The noise it makes, combined with the noise of his motorcycle puts the Occupy Gondor guard on edge. Yuri attempts to keep Boris under control, but manages instead to excite him, instead. Surpised by the sudden movement and barking, the guard fires on Boris, angering Yuri and Tristana enough that they leap into action. The noise of the fire-fight gets Peter’s attention and Parker is forced to take him on with drone support from Potomac. By the time the smoke clears, the ork is dead, the apartment abandoned, Peter is missing a leg from drone-fire and Parker is bleeding.

At Potomac’s urging, the group take their wounded and Peter to JC’s house for medical attention. JC contacts March to provide medical care to Boris. Once people are patched up, Yuri contacts Grigori, who arranges to meet them on Craney Island, an isolated area in the middle of nowhere. Reluctantly, the team agrees to the site and, despite their apprehensions, the exchange is handled without complications.
